McCormack Gymnasium FAQ
FAQ – Update on McCormack Gymnasium Project
Updated: Feb 1, 2023
Q. When will I get to access the gymnasium?
Intramural basketball and club sports will have access to the McCormack Gymnasium starting on Sunday, February 5. Access will be scheduled on the McCormack Gym Schedule.
Students and members of the Athletic Centre will have scheduled access beginning Sunday, February 5 for basketball drop-ins. Due to the amount of work required to set up different equipment and to avoid damage to the gym floor, access is limited to the use of basketball nets only through the rest of the winter term. Times for drop-ins will be listed on the McCormack Gym Schedule.
If you have any questions on booking the gym, please contact Marcel Dupuis, Manager of Athletics at mdupuis@mta.ca.
Q. When will Sackville Community Groups have access to the gym?
A. We have communicated to Sackville community groups who use the gym that they will have access in mid-March once varsity games are completed.
Q. My tuition includes a fee for gym use, why can’t I have access?
A. We understand that the entire campus and wider community is excited and eager to use the new facility and we appreciate your patience as we work through this project. Traffic on the gym floor is being limited until all renovations are completed this summer.
Students and staff and Athletic Centre members still have access to our other facilities such as the pool, the weight room, the Fitness Centre, and Dance Studio. For full details on the recreation facilities available for use, visit https://www.mountiepride.ca/recreation/recreation_-_facilities
Q. Can I support the Mounties during home games?
A. Yes. While the bleachers are not installed, spectators are welcome to attend home games and support the Mounties. There will be a limited number of seats on both sides of the gymnasium as well as standing room space. Spectators are not permitted to bring their own seating. Masks continue to be mandatory while indoors on campus.
Q. What can I expect when attending the Mounties home game?
A. The experience for spectators will look a bit different without the installation of bleachers. When arriving at the gymnasium, there will be two entrances that lead directly to seating on each side of the court. Event Service Students (ESS) will be in attendance to assist with crowd control and safety. We ask that you refrain from walking across the court with outdoor shoes on to avoid any damages to the new flooring in the gym. Masks continue to be mandatory while indoors on campus.
Q. How much is admission to attend a home game?
A. During this transition, there is no admission fee to attend a home game for the rest of the 22-23 season.
Q. If I go to a Mounties home game, do I have to wear a mask?
A. Yes. Masks continue to be mandatory while indoors on campus. For full details on Mount Allison’s COVID-19 health and safety measures throughout the winter term, please visit https://mta.ca/campus-updates
Q. Why are the renovations taking so long?
A. Scheduling issues were identified by Facilities Management and the general contractor in the early stages of the project, which caused delays in the renovation timeline.
Q. What else needs work?
A. It has been identified that further work is required on the gym floor. Traffic on the gym floor is being limited until all renovations are completed this summer. Bleachers are also not installed due to delays in delivery of the required components. The exact scope of work is being determined and will occur when the winter term is completed.
Q. Will the gym close again?
A. Once league play is completed this winter term, the gym will be unavailable for use while we complete additional work on the gym floor and install the bleachers. We anticipate the gym will be closed from April through to the end of June and will communicate more details once the additional work is finished.
Q. When will all the renovations be completed?
A. Once the additional work is completed this summer, we will communicate more details.
