Mounties finish as ACAA women's volleyball silver medallists
The Mount Allison Mounties saw their women's volleyball season come to an end on Sunday as ACAA silver medallists after dropping the championship match in four sets to Holland College. The silver medals capped off an electrifying weekend of volleyball action on Mount Allison's campus. On Friday the Mounties won their quaterfinal match in 5 sets over DAL AC. The Mounties followed that up with an impressive 4 set victory over STU in Saturday's semi-final.
The host Mounties grabbed the early momentum in the match as they won the first set 25-18, much to the delight of a fired up home crowd.
The Hurricanes, who were 18-0 during the regular season, answered back with a 25-22 win in the 2nd set. The teams stayed close throughout the set, as they did the entire afternoon.
Holland took a 2-1 lead with a 25-23 win the 3rd set. The Mounties had the lead late in the set but a push by the Hurricanes gave them the set in what proved to be a crucial point in the match.
The teams stayed close in the 4th set as the pattern of great volleyball continued. The Mounties fought off 2 match points at 22-24. But the Hurricanes found a way to close out the match with a 26-24 win.
First team All-star Abby Hyndman led the Hurricanes with 18 kills on the afternoon. Samantha Gerbig had10 kills to help her team.
Jadyn Boyles had 8 kills for the Mounties to go along with 7 kills for 2018-2019 CCAA All-Canadian Rachel McDougall .
The Mounties were playing in the ACAA championship game for the first time since winning the banner in 2011.
