Mounties open season with competitive weekend at MUN
The Mount Allison women's soccer Mounties opened the 2021 AUS regular season with a trip to Newfoundland for a pair of road games at Memorial. The Mounties finished the weekend having played some strong and competitive soccer but falling short with a 2-1 and 2-0 losses.
On Sunday, in the second game of the series between the Memorial Sea-Hawks and the Mount Allison Mounties, the home team completed the sweep wrapping up the series with a 2-0 win at King George V Park. Both teams were responsible defensively as neither side created much in terms of offence.
St. John's native Holly O'Neill opened the scoring for the Sea-Hawks in the 9th minute, setting the tone for the rest of the opening half. Both teams were very patient throughout the duration of the game, neither team was able to maintain consistent pressure in the offensive zone.
Coming out of the half up 1-0, the Sea-Hawks were in need of a good defensive half to secure another win, while the Mounties pushed forward and did everything to try and find the tying marker. Sea-Hawks forward Zoe Rowe displayed great patience in the box before finding the back of the goal in the 56th minute, adding a much-needed insurance marker for the home team.
Kanata, Ontario native, and Mounties goalkeeper Sophie Austin did everything she could to keep her side close, making 5 saves on the game, including a few 10-bell saves on some quality scoring chances.
After giving up the opening goal on Saturday, Mounties Kathryn Perry scored to tie the game 1-1. The Seahawks would score again to take a 2-1 lead. The Mounties played some strong soccer to push for the equalizer but were not able to find the back of the net.
The Mounties went undefeated in pre-season play, defeating UdeM 3-0 in exhibition play at Moncton.
