Another successful weekend for Mountie hoopsters
For the second consecutive weekend, the Mount Allison Men's team had a 2-1 record in tournament play at the Ken Gould Classic hosted by St. Thomas University in Fredericton. Thanksgiving weekend in Montreal the Mounties won two of three and at the Ken Gould they did the same in the round robin format with ACAA schools Holland College, Mount Saint Vincent, and the host STU Tommies. The Mounties now have an overall record of 4-2 in their exhibition season to date with one final game this coming Saturday, October 22 when they travel to Saint John to play the UNBSJ Seawolves in a 2:00pm start. League play around the ACAA begins the weekend of Oct 29th.
At the Ken Gould, the Mounties first game was a runaway train shootout with the Holland College Hurricanes with Mounties coming out on top 116-108. In a wild one, both teams exchanged baskets throughout the first half with Mounties holding a slim 57-56 lead at halftime. The second half was characteristic of the first. Only a 11 -0 run by the Mounties with four minutes remaining open broke up a 98-98 tie and led to the outcome. Player of the game Emanuel Adugna exploded for a game high 30 points, 21 in the second quarter. Noah McCarthy, returning to action from a shoulder injury in Montreal, added 24 points while second year forward Jonas Munroe put 22 points. First year forward Connor Briand of Kingston, Ontario came off the bench with an impressive 13 points, 4 rebounds and three three pointers to help the Mounties secure the win.
Day 2 saw the Mounties tackle the Mount Saint Vincent Mystics of Halifax who were coming off a loss the previous evening to the host STU Tommies. The Mounties jumped out to an 11-point first quarter lead and led 44-36 at the half. It was a different story quarter 3 as the Mystics dominated a 3rd quarter which saw them out score the Mounties 32-15 and, in the end, proved to be the decisive turn in the game with the Mystics coming out on top 92-81. Will Spaulding dropped 24 for the Mystics and teammate Jaxon Smith tallied 21 who pushed their weekend record to 1-1. Eight different Mounties hit the score sheet led by Noah McCarthy's 25 points. Miles Haines-Lacey of Fredericton added 14 and Jonas Munroe contributed 13 points as the Mounties fell to 1-1 in the tournament.
The final game for the Mounties was against the host STU Tommies who previously beast the Mystics and loss to Holland College the previous night. In a closely contested game with featured 5 ties and eight lead changes, the Mounties, who trailed 48-47 at the half, rallied from a 7-point deficit at the end of the third quarter to notch their second win of the weekend 90-86. The Tommies had 5 players in double figures led by Fredericton's Ethan Tumwine with 18.
