Mounties have successful weekend in Montreal, now off to STU Tourney
The Mount Allison Mounties began their exhibition season this past weekend by travelling to Montreal to participate in the Quebec Fall Classic featuring 12 men's and women's team from across Ontario, Quebec, and Atlantic Canada. The Mounties completed a successful weekend going 2-1 over the three-day event.
The Mounties first game vs Sherbrooke College saw the Mounties use a strong third quarter erupting for 29 points to break open a game that was close at half 46-35 for the Mounties. Up 75-50 after three quarters the Mounties would go on to win 92-70 for the victory. Second year forward Jonas Munroe exploded for 32 points including 5 made 3 pointers to lead all scorers. Fourth year guard and team co-captain Noah McCarthy added 19 points before leaving the game with a shoulder injury and did not participate for the remainder of the tournament. Team co-captain and defensive standout Minwoo Park added 10 points as did second year guard Miles Lacey-Haines, also with 10. Calgary native Diilo Poromon came off the bench contributing 8 second half points in his debut as a Mountie.
Day 2 saw the Mounties up against another Quebec opponent Sainte Foy. Leading 19-13 after one quarter and 38-34 at halftime, the Mounties used a stingy defense to hold Sainte Foy to only 6 points in the third quarter and opened a 22-point lead heading into the games final 10 minutes. Jonas Munroe once again held the hot hand scoring 21 points for the Mounties who walked away with the 76-60 win for their second win in a row. Veteran guard Emanuel Adugna of Toronto added 19 points while second year forward Tim Ellison contributed 17 points.
The Mounties final game of the weekend was a close hard fought 72-67 loss against Fanshawe College of London, Ontario. Both teams exchanged lead changes in the first half with the Mounties up 16-9 after the first quarter but trailing 33-32 at half. Fanshawe pushed their lead to 12 by the end of the 3rd before the Mounties came back and tied the game at 66 with one minute to play. According to Coach Steve Chapman, "Fanshawe was a really good team, very physical and pressured the entire game. Without Noah for the second game in a row and losing Minwoo to a hip injury in the fourth really stretched us a bit thin for such a young team. We had the opportunity for a different outcome but too many missed free throws and far too many turnovers really caught up to us. We need to improve those stats moving forward as we approach league play. Overall, it was a great weekend for our team and we had a lot of growth. We are pretty banged up and have some key injuries heading to STU tournament so will be lots of opportunities to develop some younger players against some of the strongest teams in our conference"
This weekend the Mounties will participate in the Ken Gould Tournament hosted by St. Thomas University in Fredericton playing Holland College, Mount Saint Vincent University, and the host STU Tommies.
