Mounties Defeat Tommies in Three Sets on Senior Day
After a weather-related postponement yesterday afternoon, the Mounties women's volleyball team returned to the court at McCormack Gymnasium to play host to the St. Thomas Tommies. It was an emotional day for the group, as head coach Robbie Crouse took the microphone prior to the match to honour three graduating seniors – Chloe Nichols, Rebecca Cotton, and Olivia Roach.
The Mounties were firmly in control for most of the match but were pushed early on by the visiting Tommies who had a 19-17 advantage late in the first set. Clutch serving from Rebecca Cotton and an important ace from Marie Fogarty helped the Mounties close the set winning 8 of the final 11 points to take the 1-0 lead by a score of 25-22.
Set 2 saw back and forth action between the two squads, with the Tommies responding to a 5-point Mount Allison run with one of their own. Attack and service errors from St. Thomas towards the end of the set proved to be costly for the visitors as the Mounties would hang on to take a 2-0 lead by a score of 25-20.
Mount Allison controlled the third set, leading wire-to-wire and survived a run by the Tommies to cut the deficit to 2 to end up winning the set 25-20 and taking the match in straight sets. Top performers for the Mounties were Chloe Nichols and Emma Burns, with 11 and 10 kills respectively. The top performer for St. Thomas was Andrea Bell with 4 kills.
Mount Allison (12-3) are back in action Saturday, February 10th in Moncton as they take on the Crandall Chargers with first serve set for 1:00pm. St. Thomas (6-8) return home and play nearby rivals UNBSJ in Fredericton on Saturday, February 10th with first serve set for 2:00pm.
