(SACKVILLE, NB) The Mount Allison Mounties women's hockey team took to the ice on Wednesday evening at the Tantramar Veterans Memorial Civic Centre to take on the St. Thomas Tommies as they looked for their second consecutive home win.
The visitors had other plans early however as fourth year forward Jacey Dane (Aurora, ON) found the back of the net within the first two minutes to give the Tommies the 1-0 advantage. That would be followed up midway through the first period by a goal from first year forward Nadia Lavoie (St. Isidore, AB) to give the road team a 2-goal lead. A Mounties powerplay generated chances but the home team was unable to capitalize as the first period ended with the score of 2-0 in favour of St. Thomas.
Mount Allison would claw one back on the powerplay six minutes into the second period as Hailey Simoneau (Milton, ON) brought the Mounties back within 1. That was as close as they would get in the period however as late goals from Peyton Van Volsen (Brooklin, ON) and Natalie MacKay (Salmon River, NS) would extend the Tommies lead to 4-1 heading into the third period.
Hailey Simoneau would add a second goal to her tally as she beat the St. Thomas goaltender early in the third period to bring the Mounties within 2. Midway through the period, Tallon Stephenson (Lloydminster, AB) would redirect a shot on the powerplay to bring the Mounties back to just a 1-goal deficit with just under 10 minutes to try and get a tying goal. The Tommies would end the Mounties hopes with 2:30 to play in the third period as Ekaterina Pelowich (Stouffville, ON) found the scoresheet to give St. Thomas a 5-3 lead and Amy Dvernichuk (Regina, SK) would add another in the final minute to make the final score 6-3 in favour of the Tommies. Ekaterina Pelowich received AUS Player of the Game honours for her 2-point performance in the St. Thomas win.
This was the final regular season game of 2023 for both teams as St. Thomas (10-3-1-2) will be back in action at home in Fredericton on Friday, January 5th against StFX with puck drop set for 7:00pm. Mount Allison (1-12-2-1) return to the ice on Thursday, January 4th, also against StFX, with that puck drop also set for 7:00pm.
