Mounties keep it competitive in loss against #1 Reds
(SACKVILLE, NB) Mount Allison hosted the UNB Reds on Wednesday night for what was their last home game of the season. UNB would go on to win by a score of 3-0.
Both teams came out physical in the opening frame trying to set the tone. UNB would have three opportunities on the powerplay to Mount Allison's one but neither team could pull out in front. Shots after 20 minutes favoured UNB 16-4.
The Reds would lean on their leaders in the second and jump out to the game's first lead as Paige Grenier (Olds, AB) tipped in the pass from Frederike Cyr (Candiac, QC) on the two-on-one break. Cyr (Hargreaves and Drost) would make it 2-0 Reds a few moments later as she picked the top corner.
Despite not registering a goal in the second the Mounties executed their gameplan and spent some quality minutes in the offensive zone. Shots after 40 minutes favoured UNB 31-11.
Mount Allison would find it difficult to stay out of the box for much of the third period. UNB eventually made them pay at the 12:48 mark when Payton Hargreaves' (Whitby, ON) slick backhand pass to Frederike Roy (Candiac, QC) in the slot found the back of the net. With her second goal and third point, Subway Player of Game Cyr moves into the top-10 in AUS scoring.
UNB's Cassie McCallum (Rothesay, NB) would go on to save all 19 shots she faced to earn her third shutout of the season. Kaitlyn Evelyn (Courtice, ON) with another solid performance for the Mounties turning aside 40 of the 43 shots she faced good for a 0.930 save percentage.
Mount Allison (2-22-1-1) will travel to Antigonish on February 10 to take on StFX at 7 p.m.
UNB (22-2-1-2) for their part will travel to UPEI on Friday for a 7 p.m. puck drop.
