The Mount Allison Mounties started family weekend with a spirited effort but came up just short as they dropped a 2-1 decision to Université de Moncton on Saturday evening.
The two teams played a very quick first period with lots of pace and not many whistles. The Mounties had the better chances, outshooting Moncton 7-3 in the period but neither team was able to find the back of the net.
The Mounties thrilled family and friends by opening the scoring 1 minute and 18 seconds into the 2nd when Maddy Koughan scored on the power play. Fifth year captain Rhiannon Ford picked up an assist on the play.
The lead was short lived for the Mounties as Gabrielle Saulnier scored unassisted just a minute and six second later to even the score at 1-1. Moncton took a 2-1 lead with four and a half minutes left in the 2nd period when Aude Masse scored on the power play. Katherine Dubuc picked up an assist on what proved to be the game's final goal.
The Mounties continued to push and finished with a 27-23 edge in shots but weren't able to find the equalizer.
For the Mounties family weekend will continue with a family brunch on Sunday morning before celebrating Seniors Day when they play the St. Thomas Tommies on Sunday at 3PM.
