Mounties book spot in the final with nailbiter win over Tommies
(FREDERICTON, NB) After booking their spot in the semi-final by virtue of finishing first in the ACAA Women's Basketball standings, the Mounties would need to go through the hometown Tommies if they wanted to play in the Championship game on Sunday.
Both teams relied on some strong defensive play which kept this a low scoring affair. The game was ultimately decided on a last second play as Second-Team All-Star Maddie Greatorex (Truro, NS) calmly took the inbound pass with less than seven seconds to play, beat her defender and gave the Mounties a 51-49 win.
Mounties Player of the Game Sophie Trail (Fredericton, NB) was everywhere as she contributed with 14 points, three steals and two rebounds. ACAA Women's Basketball Player of the Year Abby Miller (Mt. Denison, NS) got in foul trouble early but was able to manage her infractions in the second half to give her team 10 points and five rebounds.
The Tommies fought back late to make this one of the more exciting games of the season. They leaned on their bench for an offensive spark as Emily Owens (Fredericton, NB) and Celine Sterckel (Moncton, NB) put up 15 and 12 points respectively. Kylee Roi (Saint John, NB) would add eight points, two rebounds and three steal of her own.
Mount Allison will play the winner of the Holland vs. MSVU match currently on-going tomorrow, March 5 in the Championship match at 1 p.m.
